The Island of Dr. Moreau
Montgomery's Bank Holiday
Prendick: We can’t slaughter them.
Montgomery: But we can. If we so choose. That is our power as Men: to destroy everything we wish. It is our one true gift, given to us freely by God. I am damned! Come on, Prendick. Take it.
He pushes the flask toward Prendick with his right hand.
Montgomery (cont'd): Drink. Drink!
He grabs Prendick's neck with his left hand and pulls his head back, trying to force him to drink. Prendick pushes back with one hand on the flask and the other against Monty's chest. There is a brief pushing match, then Prendick shoves him back, disarming the flask to the ground between them. Monty draw his revolver and trains it at Prendick's face.
Montgomery (cont'd): I told you to bloody well drink.
Prendick: You’re no better than a beast yourself.
Montgomery: And what are you? A chalky–faced coward. A butterfly collector.
Prendick: Montgomery, please…
Monty cocks the hammer.
Montgomery: Drink.
Monty thrusts the muzzle into Prendick's forehead (passive knap by Phil). Prendick drops to his knees, stunned. Monty circles US and places the muzzle against the back of Prendick's head.
Montgomery (cont'd): Drink!
Prendick drinks.
Montgomery (cont'd): Yes! Live, man! For once!
- MONTGOMERY grabs a brandy bottle and drops the whip. He crosses to the exterior door.
Montgomery (cont'd): M’ling! Come here, you stupid brute! I’ve got something for you!
Prendick: What are you doing?
Montgomery: M’ling’s the only one who really cares for me. I’ll wager he takes his liquor like a man, unlike others I could mention.
Prendick: For God’s sake, don’t give drink to that creature.
While Monty faces out the door, Prendick places his right hand on Monty's left shoulder from behind. Monty seizes Prendick's hand with his right, steps back and under Prendick's arm, and shoves Prendick out the door. Prendick stumbles into the woodpile. The beast folk enter.
Montgomery: M’ling, old friend!
Prendick tries to escape through the vom, but sees Sayer and Satyr coming toward him. He stops.
Montgomery (cont'd): You're not going anywhere.
Prendick turns toward Monty, and Monty does a side crack wrap that seizes around Prendick's neck. He hauls Prendick into a front fall at his feet (Phil holds the whip for stability). Dog Woman rushes to Prendick comfortingly and rolls him onto his back.
Montgomery (cont'd): We’re on the edge of the pit now, Prendick.
Monty snatches up the brandy bottle and pours it down Prendick's throat.
Montgomery (cont'd): ‘Tis far better to leap in ourselves, eh? Tomorrow I fancy I’ll cut my bloody throat. But tonight? Tonight we’re going to have a damned holiday!
Ape Man: Holiday! Holiday!
Prendick: Please…
Montgomery: You’re a solemn prig, you know that? A fearing, fancying ass. Drink! Drink, you brutes! Drink and be Men!
The animals drink eagerly SR, while Dog Woman and Sloth Child huddle SL.
Montgomery (cont'd): Damn, Moreau forgot all about this. This is humanity. How beauteous mankind is! Brave new world, that has such people in it! Drink! And dance! Dance, I say!
The beast folk begin a rough circle dance. Monty shoves Prendick into the middle.
Montgomery (cont'd): Yes! Sing! Sing all together: Confound old Prendick!
Beast Folk: Confound old Prendick!
Montgomery: That’s right; now again: confound old Prendick!
Beast Folk: Confound old Prendick!
Montgomery: Now turn right!
Beast Folk: Now turn right!
Montgomery: No, no, you lackwits! That was not to sing. Go the other way!
Beast Folk: Other way! Other way!
Monty hauls Dog Woman to her feet.
Montgomery: Come on, everybody’s on holiday! Cry unto the sky!
Beast Folk: Cry unto the sky!
Monty shoves Dog Woman into the circle. Prendick takes the chance to escape, and snatches the brandy bottle from the Sayer as he does so. The following lines overlap the next action.
Montgomery: You’re awfully quiet, Mr. Prendick. Give us a howl.
Prendick: Please… you don’t have to do this…
Montgomery: None escape!
Beast Folk: None escape!
Montgomery: Cry! Scream! Are we not Men?
Beast Folk: We are Men!
Dog Woman is shoved chest-first into M'Ling, who locks her shoulders in an embrace. Dog Woman squirms out backward, bent at the waist, and her hips collide with Sayer's hips as he moves up behind her. Sayer's horn hands lock around her waist, and Dog Woman wrenches away to the right, spinning until she collides with her back against Ape Man's chest. Ape Man's left hand reaches around and clutches her right breast; Dog Woman shoves the arm down and away with both hands. Dog Woman turns and throws a right roundhouse, which Ape Man cover-blocks: he staggers away a bit from the impact. Satyr grabs the back of Dog Woman's head (she counter grabs) and pulls her back into an arch. M'Ling grasps Dog Woman's shoulder to steady her, and he shoves Satyr away into the SR wall. Dog Woman reaches up with her right hand to scratch M'Ling's face. M'Ling nails her with a right backhand slap (active knap), driving her into the ground.
Dog Woman tries to twist up to her feet (kneeling, facing DS), but Ape Man comes up behind her and grabs her between the legs (Paul's right arm is reaching around below Stacie's right arm to grab her from the front, with Stacie's right arm reaching behind her to get a grip around the back of Paul's neck). Ape Man lifts Dog Woman back and up into the air, with Sayer coming in from SL to support Dog Woman's left leg and Satyr coming in from SR to grab her right leg. Dog Woman is flipped in midair (her left leg passing over the Satyr's head) and her hands are dropped to the stage while her legs remain aloft, now straddling the Satyr's waist. The Sayer and Ape Man back away a bit.
The Satyr wrenches Dog Woman to face DS (Stacie locks her ankles behind his back while he swings her around in the air until she lands in the correct orientation in a "wheelbarrow" position). Dog Woman tries to scrabble away, but is driven by the Satyr face down into the ground. The Satyr pulls Dog Woman's hips against his groin, elevating them while forcing her face against the stage. He begins to rut. Montgomery runs to the compound and seizes the lantern.
Montgomery: You wanted to see him burn, eh, Prendick? Here’s your bloody fire! The world is ending!
The beast folk pause from slaking their lust. Dog Woman curls ina fetal position where she has fallen. Perhaps she smooths her skirt back down.
Beast Folk: The world is ending!
Montgomery: Night hangs upon my eyes! My bones would rest!
Beast Folk: Bones would rest!
Montgomery: Tonight we dance, for tomorrow we die!
Beast Folk: Tomorrow we die!
Montgomery: Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow!
Beast Folk: Tomorrow we die! Tomorrow we die!
The head of Swine Woman is thrown onstage stage from UL. Sloth Child investigate. Hyaena-Swine bursts onto stage, and snatches up Sloth Child, who resists violently. Monty draw his revolver and moves toward him.
Montgomery: Get back here, you hear me!
Hyaena-Swine Man carries the child off UL. Monty runs to DSL and fires after him. (Note: probably during this time, M'Ling retrieves the blood sponge which he will need later.)
Prendick: Montgomery, listen to me: it’s gone savage. We need to get inside for our own safety now. Put an end to this…
Montgomery: No one asked you, butterfly.
Monty shoves Prendick back with a hand to the face. Prendick does a front fall, and the brandy bottle skitters toward the beast folk. Monty crosses to SR, pausing to stomp near Dog Woman and scare her to go cower against the SR wall.
Sayer of the Law: More!
Montgomery: No more, old chap. So sorry…
M’ling: More! More!
Montgomery: Shut up, you.
Sayer of the Law: More!
Satyr: More!
Ape Man: More! Five! More! Yes!
Satyr: Yes!
Montgomery: Bugger off, you brutes! There is no more. No more forever and ever, amen.
The beast folk begin to crowd around Monty. M'Ling is DSC, just in front of the vom stairs.
M’ling: Overlap Please!
Satyr: Overlap More!
Ape Man: Overlap Now! Now! Now! Yes!
Sayer of the Law: Overlap More! More!
Sayer of the Law: You are weak! We are strong!
Satyr: Yes! We are strong!
Sayer of the Law: It is the new Law!
Monty uses his right hand (still holding the gun) to shove the Sayer back a step.
Satyr: Yes!
The Satyr grabs Monty's chest with both hand and slings him upstage between the woodpile and the compound. He then charges in, head lowerd. M'Ling tries to grab the Satyr, but misses. The Satyr's horns strike Monty in the stomach (contact hit, guided in by Yosh) and rake upward. Monty is thrown back, gasping. M'Ling catches up to the Satyr and spins him downstage. Monty circles the woodpile SR, trying to get a shot.
Montgomery: To the SATYR Get off, you! Don’t you hurt him!
Prendick: Stop this...
In the grapple, M'Ling stands the Satyr upright. (Note: for reference, the orientation of character from SR to SL is: Monty, Satyr, M'Ling). Monty fires at the Satyr, striking him in the right shoulder. The Satyr reacts into M'Ling's chest (Sean bloodies John's chest with the blood sponge). M'Ling pushes Satyr off, and Satyr turns to face Monty and falls back against M'Ling again (Sean bloodies the entrance wound on John's back with the sponge). The Satyr stumbles off as M'Ling realizes that he has been shot in the chest as the bullet passes clean through the Satyr. M'Ling stumbles upstage to collapse against the wall.
Montgomery: No! Oh, God, no. To the SATYR Look what you made me do!
Monty crosses DS between Sayer and Satyr, who mutely let him pass.
Montgomery (cont'd): This is your fault, you stupid savage! You animal! Damn you!
Hidden from their view, Monty cocks the revolver, then sudeenly spins US and fires at the Satyr. The gun is empty. He tries again.
Sayer of the Law: You are weak.
Satyr: You are weak.
Montgomery: Get back.
Monty sntaches up the whip with his left hand, tossing it with a crack between them. Monty scuttles DSL.
Montgomery (cont'd): Get away. Obey me!
Monty lashes the Satyr in the face (out of distance overhand crack). The Satyr absorbs the pain, but is not cowed.
Sayer of the Law: Who are you that we should obey?
The Satyr moves in a bit, wiping his face against his left bicep. Monty lashes at him again, wrapping around the Satyr's left wrist (on the DS side). The Satyr uses the wrap to grab the whip. Monty tries to yank the whip away, but the Satyr holds on.
Montgomery: Prendick…
The Satyr yanks the whip out of Monty's hand. He and the Sayer begin to circle counter-clockwise towards Monty, with Satyr in the lead. Monty counters upstage.
Sayer of the Law: You don’t command us.
Satyr: The Master is dead.
Sayer of the Law: There is no more pain.
Satyr: No more whips for ever again.
Monty is now UC of the two beast men. He grabs the burning brand from the woodpile and jabs it at them. They recoil quickly.
Montgomery: Bow down!
Monty uses the brand to keep them at bay while they continue to stalk him. Eventually Monty is DS, just SR of the vom, with Satyr USR of him and Sayer USL.
Sayer of the Law: Your Law is not our law.
Satyr: Your ways are not our ways.
Sayer of the Law: Our lives are our own.
Satyr: Our minds are our own.
Montgomery: You have nothing that we did not give you!
Sayer of the Law: Except our lives.
Satyr: Except our lives.
Sayer of the Law: Except our lives! And they are our own!
Monty advances on Sayer, waving the brand to force him back. When he is SL of Satyr (and just a bit DS of him), Monty suddenly whirls to strike the Satyr in the head (U-D blow, active knap). Satyr drops to his knees facing US. Monty steps just USL of him, and uses both hands on the brand to crush the Satyr's skull (U-D strike, passive knap). The Sayer roars, and Monty turns back toward him, swinging a slash at the Sayer's head (L-R safety slash as the Sayer avoids back). The Sayer steps in and jams his right horn-hand forearm deep into Monty's gut (Yosh facing US masking the attack). The burning brand flies out of Monty's hand from the impact, falling in the compound. Monty pushes down with both hands to try and work himself up and off the impaling horn. . Monty stumbles back into a seat drop, resting against the DS audience riser.
Prendick: Get off him!
Prendick rushes the Sayer, barging him from behind. The Sayer stumbles into the burning woodpile, scorching himself. Prendick grabs a large rock and bashes the Sayer from behind (Non contact two-hand UR-DL, vocal knap only). The Sayer falls to his knees, and Prendick strikes again (two-hand, U-D, vocal knap). The Sayer falls prone and motionless. Prendick drops the rock and rushes to Monty's side, pulling him slightly SL and turning him so his face is visible to the audience.
Montgomery: Sorry. The last of this silly universe. What a mess… Sound and fury…
Monty dies. There is a howl in the jungle. The Sayer stirs on the ground. Prendick rushes back US, grabs the rock, and straddles Sayer from above. He smashes the Sayer in the head (U-D, vocal knap) and the Sayer's legs twitch as the Sayer dies. Prendick smashes again anyway (U-D, no knap, no reaction).
Whew.**
